Major New Three-year EMS Programme Launches With Extensive Investment And Support From Independent Vetcare

A significant development in the realisation of Independent Vetcare (IVC)'s objective to become the Veterinary Employer of Choice, its new three-year structured Extra Mural Studies (EMS) programme is now underway.
The comprehensive EMS programme has been designed to mirror the academic curriculum of students as they progress through years 3, 4 and 5 of vet school; shaped by extensive input from universities, clinicians and new graduates. It will develop essential practical skills as students work through a wide-ranging skills matrix, putting theory into clinical practice as they 'see one, assist one, do one'. Students undertaking the IVC EMS programme will also be able to fast track onto the IVC New Graduate Academy.
Darren Mackintosh, IVC Operations Manager, has helped drive the project to fruition. "With this unique three-year EMS programme, we have created a structured network of support and development that allows students to gain invaluable real-world experience earlier in their training. At IVC, supporting our vets both professionally and personally is very important, and so we've worked hard to ensure that the EMS programme will help undergraduates develop competence and confidence in a safe and supportive practice environment."
David Hillier, CEO of IVC explains the group's commitment to the new EMS programme.

Beginning in year three allows students to learn new skills and apply them in a supportive environment, meeting new colleagues and taking on new challenges. EMS placements can be arranged across IVC's national network of almost 300 practices, and can ultimately lead students into a structured career path from Graduate to Senior Clinician, Referral Surgeon, Clinical Directorship and beyond."
Matthew Erskine MRCVS is currently in his second year of IVC's New Graduate Academy, having completed an EMS placement at Crown Vets in Inverness. He was also part of the development group that wrote the three-year programme. "My own experience with IVC has been fantastic - by undertaking EMS at Crown Vets I developed strong bonds, both with the practice team and the group ethos. Moving on to IVC's New Graduate Academy has allowed me to continue my post-graduate training and personal development and I hope to pursue my career within the group for the considerable future. EMS gave me a real competitive advantage, as well as building clinical and business skills in a safe and supportive environment.
