Middlesbrough Veterinary Nurse Wins Top Weight Management Award After Helping Hundreds Of Local Pets

A veterinary nurse from White Cross Vets in Coulby Newham near Middlesbrough, who has helped improve the health and welfare of hundreds of local pets through her weight loss clinics, has been presented with a prestigious national award in recognition of her efforts.
Amy Hood won the Managing Weight with Excellence 2023 Award at The British Veterinary Nursing Association’s (BVNA) annual congress, which is the biggest veterinary nursing event in the UK.
Recent success stories Amy has been involved with include two Labrador brothers who lost 16kg between them to help manage their osteoarthritis, a crossbreed who lost 11kg so she could be safely spayed and a Miniature Dachshund who achieved a 40% weight reduction to reduce his risk of spinal problems.
She has also previously implemented a specially designed weight loss plan for a local Labrador who lost a staggering 16kg. He originally weighed a whopping 54kg, meaning he was 45% above his recommended weight.
Amy, who has worked at White Cross Vets for 15 years, said: “Throughout my career I have met many overweight pets. Managing their weight can be a challenge for owners, especially in those breeds which are known to love their food. Guiding owners through their pet’s weight loss journey has become my passion and seeing the positive impact weight loss can make to a pet’s quality of life is very rewarding!
“An assessment of each individual pet’s lifestyle helps me to create a plan which includes a low calorie, high fibre diet and an exercise regime dependant on their life stage. Once a plan is in place, regular weight check appointments to assess the pet’s progress help to ensure they are heading in the right direction and also means I can offer any advice along the way.
“Weight loss for overweight pets has many benefits and it’s always great to see positive results which give pets a new lease of life. Maintaining a healthy weight ensures they live longer and happier lives and it is our goal to help as many pets with their weight loss through our weight management clinics.
“To be recognised by Hill’s for something I am very passionate about at work, and receiving an award for it is amazing.”
