Ninety-two per cent of veterinary surgeons surveyed in a nationwide research campaign reported that cat owners found a liquid solution ‘easier to use’ than tablets for the medical treatment of lifelong hyperthyroidism.

The Norbrook survey of 200 veterinary surgeons revealed that 95 per cent reported success treating cats with Thyronorm® Oral Solution for Cats, while 89 per cent expected the breakthrough liquid solution to improve compliance in the management of hyperthyroidism.

The survey also shows that 93 per cent of veterinary surgeons found Thyronorm gave them an easier way to offer cats a low dose, or an 'in-between' dose, as it can be titrated ‘to effect’ – meaning the dose of treatment can be varied more easily to suit the individual animal.

Feline hyperthyroid specialist Dr Sarah Caney is unsurprised by the survey results and agrees that a treatment that is popular with cats, and is easily accepted, such as Thyronorm, is ultimately making owners’ lives easier.

“Treatment is complex for cats needing a low dose, or an ‘in between’ dose, as standard anti-thyroid tablets are only available in a small number of dose sizes and are not designed to be split, halved or quartered. Also, if a cat is on alternating doses, it can be difficult for carers to remember which dose is due ‘today’.”

Dr Rachel Crowe, Norbrook’s Companion Animal Senior Product Manager, says the disease affected a cat’s behaviour, making them irritable, anxious, and difficult to medicate.

“Thyronorm’s flavoured, liquid formulation is specifically designed to increase compliance and improve titration ability for precise and accurate management of hyperthyroid cats.

“We are delighted that overall 99 per cent of the 200 veterinary surgeons surveyed would recommend Thyronorm in the management of hyperthyroidism, compared to other medical options.”

Dr Crowe said Thyronorm’s highly innovative dosage form, with added honey flavouring for even greater pet acceptance, was awarded this year’s International Cat Care Easy to Give Award.

“Thyronorm is helping to maintain the pet-owner bond. The easier the medication is to give cats, the less stressful this is for the carer and the pet,” she says.

Thyronorm contains 5mg/ml of thiamazole (methimazole), a tried and trusted active ingredient in a novel formulation, proven to have in-vivo bioequivalence to thiamazole-containing tablets. The initial starting dose is 5mg active ingredient per day, split into two doses and made simple with a clearly marked dosing syringe.

Available in 30ml and 100ml bottles, with an in-use shelf life of six months, Thyronorm provides the simple solution to stabilisation of hyperthyroid cats prior to surgery or radioiodine therapy and the answer for those owners wishing to continue treating with medication for the long term. Thyronorm is available to order from all UK veterinary wholesalers.
