PDSA Offers PetWise MOT Workshops For Veterinary Profession
Vet charity PDSA is offering training workshops to help veterinary professionals deliver welfare checks known as ‘PetWise MOTs’.
The checks focus on all five welfare needs, as defined in the Animal Welfare Acts, and were developed in response to findings from the annual PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report which highlighted low levels of awareness of the five welfare needs amongst pet owners*.
Nicola Martin, Head of Pet Health & Welfare, said: “We know there is more to a pet’s wellbeing than just providing for their basic health needs. This unique consultation structure was developed as a practical tool to help inform and engage owners about what their pets need to be healthy and happy.”
The consultations and follow up action plans were first trialled on the charity’s mobile PetCheck vehicles, then expanded to PDSA’s 51 Pet Hospitals as the positive impact of the MOTs became clear to see.
PDSA is now offering a limited number of spaces on training days for the wider veterinary profession on how to deliver PetWise MOTs in a bid to improve pet wellbeing across the UK. The workshops count for seven hours of CPD and cost just £20 to cover course materials and refreshments on the day.

Alison Case, Area Veterinary Manager North London & Essex, said: “PetWise MOTs give a really practical approach to running clinics based on the pet’s welfare needs. We’ve seen a positive impact on patient care by looking at husbandry at home as well as the clinical concerns of the patient. The consultations help to strengthen the clinic-client bond through professional support and advice. We’ve had great feedback from our clients, who are now much more aware of the routine needs of their pets and often attend for further check-ups as well as regularly purchasing preventive treatments.”
PetWise MOT training is suitable for all clinical members of practice teams but may be of more interest to nursing teams and those with a keen interest in engaging clients with the welfare needs of their pets. The workshops will focus on dogs, cats and rabbits, although the consultations are transferable to all species.
PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, treating more than 470,000 pets annually across its 51 Pet Hospitals. The charity strives to improve all pets’ lives through education, preventive care and emergency treatment. For more information visit www.pdsa.org.uk.
* Animal Welfare Acts refers to the Animal Welfare Act 2006 in England & Wales, the Animal Health and Welfare (Scotland) Act 2006, and the Welfare of Animals Act (Northern Ireland) 2011. Owners’ awareness of these Acts has declined significantly in the last five years, falling from 45% in 2011 to 31% in 2015.
