Allen Parton with EJ at ATM Allen Parton with EJ at ATM Pfizer Animal Health is launching a fund-raising campaign on its BronchiShield Kennel Cough vaccine this month to raise money for the charity Hounds for Heroes. Partnering with vet practices around the country with its ‘Pounds for Hounds’ initiative, Pfizer will donate 25 pence for each dog vaccinated with BronchiShield to raise £20,000 for the charity – the cost to buy, train and support an assistance dog throughout its life. Established in 2010 by Gulf War Veteran Allen Parton, Hounds for Heroes provides specially trained assistance dogs to injured and disabled men and women of both the UK armed forces and civilian emergency services. Earlier this year, Pfizer donated £20,000 to Hounds for Heroes to train Vanguard, the charity’s newest canine recruit. Funds raised from Pounds for Hounds will pay for the training and lifetime costs of a second puppy. Hounds for HeroesAllen spent five years in hospital coming to terms with his injuries after a tragic war time head injury wiped out his memories leaving him unable to walk, speak or write. He couldn’t even remember his wife or children. When Allen was partnered with assistance dog Endal, it changed his life and brought his independence back. Endal could respond to over 100 commands as well as problem solve, and once saved Allen’s life by putting him in the recovery position and going for help. John Toole, Pfizer Animal Health product manager comments: “We are delighted to both support a charity that is very close to our hearts and provide a platform for vet practices to talk to their clients about Kennel Cough and encourage them to vaccinate against this widespread disease. We are hoping that practices adopt the campaign as their own and use the specially produced waiting room leaflets, posters and vaccination reminder cards. Allen Parton comments: “This is the first time we have partnered with a company to raise funds and we’re delighted to do so with an animal health company because our dog’s health and welfare is of paramount importance. Not only will it help us fund another puppy but it will also encourage more dog owners to have their pets vaccinated for Kennel Cough. “The mental and physical help provided by a trained assistance dog is phenomenal – Endal literally saved my life. There are 900,000 injured men and women in the country today and if money were no object we would ensure that every single one of them had access to a Hounds for Heroes dog. It costs £20,000 to fund one of these dogs and it is initiatives such as this Pounds for Hounds campaign that help us get that bit closer to our goal.” For further information about the campaign contact your Pfizer veterinary sales manager.
