PRESTIGIOUS APPROVAL FOR SOUTHFIELDS ONCOLOGY RESIDENCY PROGRAMME
A leading referral vet centre has received official approval for its innovative new oncology residency programme from the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM).
Southfields Veterinary Specialists, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, is one of just a few centres in Europe to offer a specialist training programme, or residency, in veterinary medical oncology.
The Essex-based centre offers a unique training opportunity for candidates, with four experienced European and RCVS Specialists in oncology including Jérôme Benoît, a world-renowned American and European-certified Veterinary Specialist in Radiation Oncology, and Sarah Mason (RCVS and European Specialist in Oncology), who is the first person in Europe to have undertaken an approved European training programme in radiation, offering both medical and radiation treatments for cancer patients.
The three-year programme has now been officially approved by the ECVIM, which aims to raise the standards of companion animal internal medicine in Europe and establish an internationally-recognised specialist title.
Aaron Harper (RCVS and European Specialist in Veterinary Oncology) is the newly-created programme director. He said: “Southfields is one of only a handful of centres that offers both medical and radiation oncology and we are committed to training the next generation of Oncology Specialists.
“We have a strong multi-disciplinary approach and the resident will be supported by colleagues in ECC, internal medicine, soft tissue, orthopaedic, cardiorespiratory medicine, neurology, dermatology and diagnostic imaging.”
Southfields’ operations manager Daniel Hogan believes the official approval of the ECVIM reflects the strength of the centre’s programme.
He said: “Our dedicated oncology ward, treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art chemotherapy suite are all staffed by oncology experts, dedicated oncology nurses and radiation technicians, ensuring the best care possible at all times.
“Our residency programme will provide candidates with an unrivalled experience and education, and we’re delighted to have had official approval from the ECVIM as we continue to invest in people and the future of the industry.”
As a multi-disciplinary centre of excellence, Southfields offers industry-leading, 24-hour care for Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Cardiology, Dermatology, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics and Soft Tissue Surgery.
