Bringing medical and veterinary education closer together ProfessorDameLesleySouthgate.jpgProfessor Dame Lesley Southgate, DBE, DSc, FRCP, FRCGP, FMed Sci, FAcad Med Ed, Professor of Medical Education at St George’s, University of London, has been appointed for a four-year term to the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) Council to bolster expertise in the field of clinical education. The RVC Council has legal responsibility for strategic direction, governance and control of the College. The majority of RVC Council Members are drawn from the worlds of business and commerce, the veterinary profession, academia and the public sector. By being external to the College, Members such as Dame Lesley Southgate bring a wealth of experience to specific areas of RVC activity. Dame Lesley Southgate has extensive medical health credentials which, because of the similarities between medical and veterinary education, will be invaluable to the RVC Council. Her career highlights include becoming the President of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 2000. From 1996-2004 she led the President’s programme to develop and implement the assessment methods for the General Medical Council performance procedures for the medical profession. Dame Lesley Southgate was also a Member of the Postgraduate Medical Education Training Board to November 2006, where she chaired the Statutory Committee on Assessment and its subcommittee on examinations in postgraduate training. In 2008, she received the prestigious Hubbard Award, conferred by the US National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), for outstanding contributions to the assessment of competence and performance of doctors in the international arena. This led to Dame Lesley Southgate being elected as a Board Member-at-Large at the 2009 NBME Annual Meeting. She is also the immediate Past President of the Association for the Study of Medical Education and was the Founder and Inaugural Chairman of the Academy of Medical Educators established in 2007 to promote excellence in all aspects of medical education and training. Professor Dame Lesley Southgate comments: “I am delighted to have been appointed to the RVC Council. The interrelationship of medical and veterinary sciences leads to much cross-over in the education of the two disciplines. Having worked for many years developing and implementing assessment methods in the human medical field, applying this knowledge to the veterinary sector is a natural step.” Professor Quintin McKellar, Principal of the RVC, said of the appointment: “Dame Lesley Southgate is an internationally-renowned medical educator who has devoted enormous energy to establishing innovative approaches to the teaching of clinical skills in the medical field. It is this expertise that will contribute to the RVC’s continued drive to deliver excellence in teaching and education.”
