ROYAL CANIN Announces Winners Of The First Healthy Weight Competition

ROYAL CANIN has announced the winners of the new Healthy Weight Competition following its launch across the UK and Ireland last year.

With over 360 entries, the competition is designed to provide support and reward weight loss in cats and dogs, recognising the hard work pet owners and veterinary nurses put in to maintaining a pet’s healthy weight.

Categories included; best long-term weight management, best pet/ owner weight loss, best starter, best before/after photo and best journey with the overall winner, nine year old Schipperke, Angus and his owners taking home a £1,000 holiday voucher, £300 to spend at their practice and a trophy. Victoria Robinson, the winning vet nurse, also took home a £1,000 holiday voucher and trophy. Each of the category winners received an award, a choice of a pet photoshoot or pet portrait, with the nurses being awarded £100 of shopping vouchers.

Sarah Collins, veterinary marketing executive at ROYAL CANIN, said: “ROYAL CANIN has supported veterinary practices across the UK and Ireland with weight management, working closely with veterinary nurses as part of the ROYAL CANIN Weight Management Programme. 

“We are delighted to see recognition for the hard work pet owners and veterinary staff put into keeping pets healthy, and look forward to supporting them for many years to come.”

The winners

Best long-term weight management

Ten year old cat, Charlie, began the ROYAL CANIN Weight Management Programme in March 2014. With the support of veterinary nurse Anna Wright, from Mimram Veterinary Centre in Welwyn,Charlie reached his target in just eight months, dropping in weight from 7.2kg to 5kg. Since then he has remained on the same diet and consistently maintained a weight of just under 5kg.

Best pet/ owner weight loss

With the care and assistance of Alison Miles, vet nurse at St. Georges vet group in Wolverhampton, Six year old Labrador Bella has lost 7kg and seven year old Labradoodle Jake has lost 6.5kg since starting the Weight Management Programme in June 2015.  Their owner, Mr Madley, also shared the weight loss challenge by following a Slimming World plan, losing three stone!

Best starter

Six year old pug Bowie started on the ROYAL CANIN Obesity Management diet, with a target to lose 15% of his body weight, after suffering weight-related complications including seizures and difficulty breathing. Claire Stanley, vet nurse at Daventry Veterinary Clinic helped jump start Bowie’s weight loss by putting him on a strict diet and in six months he lost over 2kg and reduced his bodyweight by 15%.

Best journey

Using the ROYAL CANIN Satiety diet, nine year old Schipperke, Angus, lost 3kg over a five month period. His owner experienced initial struggles with the weight loss programme but with the support and advice from Victoria Robinson, clinic nurse at Vets4Pets in Eastwood, he overcame this and found the support also helped Angus feel more comfortable and relaxed within the practice. Angus also took home the prize of overall winner.

Dual winner, Fat Dave, the six year old cat, began his diet in December 2013 at 9.4kg. Sophie Campbell, the veterinary nurse at Cramar vet practice Birmingham recommended ROYAL CANIN’s satiety diet and advised on portion sizes appropriate for Dave’s size and target weight. After a lot of perseverance from Sophie and the owner, Dave reached his target weight of 6.1kg – losing a total of 2.4kg.

Best Before/After photo

Amanda Arme, vet nurse at Vets4pets Gamston, submitted the winner photo’s for this category of three year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Toby.  The dramatic photos show the incredible 28% (3.7kgs) which Toby lost with the help of Amanda and his owners.
