Series Of Away Days For Vets And Nurses To Be Continued In 2023

Four away days covering medicine, ophthalmology, anaesthesia and surgery have been hosted by veterinary group Linnaeus in 2022 – with plans to hold further training sessions in 2023.
The events hosted 195 nurses and veterinary surgeons from primary care practices and referral hospitals across the UK. They aimed to share best practice and build relationships between referral specialists; certificate holders and those with a special interest in specific areas in primary care; and specialist nursing teams, with nurses invited to join the medicine and anaesthesia events.
The agenda was shaped by delegates, with an opportunity to vote for topics of discussion and time for networking across the group.
External speakers included Dr David Maggs, Professor of Comparative Veterinary Ophthalmology at the University of California; Dr Amie Burbridge, Consultant in Acute Medicine at University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire; Dr Laura Naumann, Post-CCT Liver Fellow at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham; and Carolyne Crowe, Head of Training at the Veterinary Defence Society.
Professor Séverine Tasker, Chief Medical Officer at Linnaeus, commented:
“The away days aimed to deepen our commitment to best practice and the high quality of care for our patients across a range of disciplines. Our teams directed the items to discuss on the day and the sharing of knowledge was brilliant to see.
“We have such fantastic associates within the group. It was particularly rewarding to include our nursing teams on two away days to promote collaboration even further. The sessions were very well received and we are planning to host further events for our teams in 2023. The ability to connect at these events is hugely important.”
Discussions at the events ranged from clinical workflow and efficiency in theatre to sustainability, the role of nursing teams and research opportunities. As a result of their collaborative sessions, a group of nurses across several referral hospitals are now working together to conduct a multi-site clinical audit.
Vicky Maund, Head of Nursing Services at Willows Veterinary Centre & Referral Service, attended the medicine event. She commented:
“The away day was a great opportunity to meet other nurses and vets with a passion for medicine. I really enjoyed networking with other Linnaeus practices and joining the mix of discussions, which highlighted how we can all support each other.”
William McFadzean, Head of Specialist Services at Cave Veterinary Specialists, joined the anaesthesia away day. He added:
“Taking the time to share the perspectives of our specialists, clinicians, nurses and residents generated some really interesting discussions. Having a combination of different teams from across Linnaeus provided a real mix of ideas, many of which I have shared with Cave’s team so we can continue to learn from others.”
