Solihull College Lecturer Claire Powell Is Recognised For Outstanding Contribution To Animal Care Sector

An Animal Care Lecturer from Solihull College has been recognised by her former college for her outstanding achievements since qualifying. Claire Powell, who is also Coordinator of the Animal Care Centre at Solihull College, recently received The Frank Howell Outstanding Old Student Award from Warwickshire College for her dedication and enthusiasm to the animal welfare industry and education. The 34-year-old from Solihull comments: “It was a complete shock to receive this award but I am incredibly honoured. I have always loved animals and after studying at Warwickshire College I knew that working with animals was the career for me.” Claire attended Warwickshire College from 1994 to 1996 where she gained the National Diploma in Animal Care with Distinction. Whilst there, she also received the Premier Student Award. Following this, Claire studied at Anglia University where she achieved a First Class Honours degree in Animal Behaviour, Ecology and Conservation. Claire returned to Warwickshire College as an Animal Care Instructor and Technician in 2000, carrying out a number of roles until 2005, when she left to join Solihull College. Throughout her career at Solihull College, Claire has been instrumental in transforming the Animal Care Centre into a state-of-the-art learning environment, as well as inspiring others through her teaching on various Animal Care programmes. Nigel Smith, Head of Animal Care at Solihull College and Claire’s Line Manager, comments: “We are enormously proud of Claire for achieving this award and it is thoroughly deserved. She is extremely hard working and passionate about the animal care sector and this is evident in all of her work.
