A leading Essex referral centre has unveiled specialist Miriam Martinez as its new Head of Diagnostic Imaging.

The European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging diplomate will head up the highly-qualified imaging team at Southfields Veterinary Specialists, in Essex, which is part of the UK-wide Linnaeus Group.

Dr Martinez will head up a team including experienced clinician Friederike Rau, DrMedVet MRCVS, as Southfields continues to bolster its state-of-the-art imaging offering to ensure first class care for its patients.

Southfields clinical director Dr Henry L’Eplattenier said: “We’re delighted to see Miriam take on this important role, as specialists in diagnostic imaging are such an integral part of our patient care team.

“They are on top of the rapid advancement in technology which has resulted in digital imaging and advanced cross-sectional techniques, and provide expert interpretation of all types of images –
X-rays, MRI and CT scans – to help focus our care and treatment.”

Dr Martinez, who qualified as a specialist in February after four years of studying, said: “I’m really looking forward to my new role at Southfields. It will be so rewarding to put into practice everything I have learned.

“The specialist training was a demanding and exhausting experience but the skills to interpret images are vital in helping the team provide the best possible care for our patients and clients.”

Miriam graduated from the University of Murcia (Spain) in 2010 and returned there in 2015 to undertake her residency in Diagnostic Imaging small animal track (ECVDI).

She completed the three-year residency programme in April 2018, during which time she spent several months at the Universities of Dublin and Glasgow, and finished her studies in February with her final exam.

Earlier in her career, Miriam completed an internship in Diagnostic Imaging at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of Murcia and went through a one-year rotatory internship from 2013 to 2014 at Southfields, previously named VRCC, in the UK.

She has published several scientific papers in the field of Diagnostic Imaging, spoken at national and international conferences and lectured at national level in Spain.

Now, she says her ambition is: “To enjoy life and my career to the best of my abilities. To be happy and enjoy my work every single day.”

Southfields also offers industry-leading specialist care in Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Cardiology, Dermatology, Feline Medicine, Internal Medicine, Neurology, Oncology, Orthopaedics, Radiation and Soft Tissue Surgery.
