SPVS Sail Training 2009
VETS with an adventurous spirit who will relish a challenge combined with CPD need look no further than SPVS Sail Training 2009, which runs from 12th 18th September. The annual Society of Practising Veterinary Surgeons (SPVS) event, which has proved extremely popular in previous years, will see a group of up to ten practitioners learn new sailing skills, team building and valuable professional training. This year¹s Sail Training will see delegates sail from Oban to enjoy some of the best sailing in Britain around the Western Isles of Scotland. The crew will be taught by their skipper how to get to grips with their 100 foot, 120-year old gaff rigged Brixham trawler named Leader. Training will include how to handle sails without winches and basic navigation and collision regulations. Crew members will also include a bosun, first mate, cook and possibly an assistant cook. CPD will include a lecture stream entitled Œa practical approach to haematology¹, which will be partly interactive; and some management topics. The boat has 10 guest berths and participants do all the sail work as well as chores like washing up. There are opportunities for delegates to do RYA Competent Crew Certificate or work towards other sailing qualifications. Price is £600 plus a registration fee of £275. As evidenced by previous years, demand is expected to be high, so anyone interested is advised to contact SPVS Office on 01926 410 454 or email office@spvs.org.uk to register their interest.More from
