Northwest Surgeons has appointed two new soft tissue surgeons to join the expanding team at the Cheshire-based specialist referral centre.

Rachel Burrow and Rachel Hattersley are both recognised as specialists by the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS).

It continues Northwest Surgeons’ investment into facilities and people, to support major expansion of the services being offered.

Liz Cousins, hospital manager at Northwest Surgeons, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to attract two experienced veterinary specialists and European Diploma holders to Northwest Surgeons.

“The business has undergone significant expansion recently and they will both play key roles in the continued development of the soft tissue department.

“Rachel and Rachel have a keen interest in surgical oncology and will be working closely with Northwest Surgeon’s oncology and imaging teams to provide a gold-standard multi-modal approach to cancer cases.

“At Northwest Surgeons we treat pets from as far apart as Carlisle, North Yorkshire and Staffordshire; with specialist disciplines including orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, neurology (medical and surgical), oncology, imaging, anaesthesia, and internal medicine.”

Rachel Burrow has more than 25 years’ of veterinary experience after qualifying from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 1991.

After four years in general practice, Rachel completed a three-year residency in small animal surgery at the Royal Veterinary College.

She has a wealth of clinical experience, working as a soft tissue surgeon at both University College Dublin and the University of Liverpool.

Rachel holds the RCVS certificate in veterinary radiology and has post-graduate training in radiology, holds a Masters degree in clinical oncology in addition to her ECVS diploma.

“I am thrilled to be joining the team at Northwest Surgeons to help expand the soft tissue division,” said Rachel (Burrow).

“Northwest Surgeons has a fantastic reputation in the veterinary profession and I’m very much looking forward to continue growing the business and caring the pets referred to the centre.

“Rachel and I are very interested in brachycephalic health problems and are looking to set up a brachycephalic clinic, specifically to offer a multi-disciplinary service for these breeds and the various health problems, which they suffer from.”

Rachel Hattersley graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2003, and spent five years in general practice before completing an ECVS residency in small animal surgery at the University of Liverpool, achieving the European diploma in small animal surgery in 2012.

She has spent the past five years working as a soft tissue surgeon in a busy multi-disciplinary referral hospital, has a keen interest in both research and education and sits on the BSAVA Programme Committee and the AVSTS Research Co-Operative Committee.

Rachel has a broad range of veterinary research interests including brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome, ureteral obstructions in cats and biliary surgery in dogs.

Rachel (Hattersley) said: “Soft tissue surgery is such an important service for clients and their pets and I’m delighted to now be part of the exceptionally talented team at Northwest Surgeons.

“The facilities are state-of-the-art, and having an on-site anaesthesia team provides incredible support during all surgeries, especially in more complicated respiratory, trauma and septic patients.

“I am very pleased to be working with Rachel Burrow again, as we had a really good relationship when she was my residency supervisor and I look forward to growing the service together.”

Professor Dick White, soft tissue surgeon, oncology specialist and clinical director of the Pets at Home Vet Group, said: “I am delighted to welcome such experienced clinicians to our team, and it is particularly satisfying to see so much enthusiasm among our newest recruits.

“They are excited about the developments and opportunities available and looking forward to participating in multi-disciplinary patient care, and working with colleagues in anaesthesia, critical care, internal medicine and diagnostic imaging.”
