Thyronorms? Liquid Formula Improves Compliance In Cats With Hyperthyroidism

Feline hyperthyroid specialist, Dr Sarah Caney, says Thyronorm® Oral Solution for Cats, with its breakthrough liquid solution, is revolutionising the compliance levels of lifelong hyperthyroidism treatment.

“Due to the disease affecting a cat’s behaviour and making them irritable and anxious, it can make them difficult to medicate,” says Dr Caney.

“Cats are often a challenge to dose with owners battling with traditional tablet form medication, so the feedback is that a treatment that is popular with cats, and is easily accepted, such as Thyronorm, is ultimately making owners’ lives easier.”

Dr Caney says treatment is complex for cats needing a low dose, or an ‘in between’ dose as standard anti-thyroid tablets are only available in a small number of dose sizes and are not designed to be split, halved or quartered. Also, if a cat is on alternating doses, it can be difficult for carers to remember which dose is due ‘today’.

“Thyronorm meets these challenges as it can be titrated ‘to effect’ – meaning the dose of treatment can be varied to suit the individual cat.”

One example of improved compliance is the Minetti family from London and their cat, Sir Humphrey Bearington – who was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism earlier this year. Life has improved for the cat and owners since Thyronorm treatment started three months ago.

Sir Humphrey was notoriously difficult to treat with any tablet, so the thought of administering his medication twice daily with a tablet for the rest of his life was a daunting prospect – so Alexandra Minetti asked her local vet if an alternative was available.

“Sir Humphrey absolutely loves taking his Thyronorm medication from the syringe – it must be the honey flavour. He’s a bit like a child and sits on our laps like it’s a treat,” says Alexandra.

“In the evenings he has his medication at 6.30pm, and if we’re 10 minutes late, he’ll come find us and start meowing until we give it to him.

“In the past we needed a towel to protect ourselves from being ripped to shreds, and he’d almost always throw tablets up. The syringe allows Sir Humphrey to almost take the medication himself, so we’re all much happier.”

Dr Rachel Crowe, Norbrook’s Companion Animal Senior Product Manager, said the flavoured, liquid formulation is specifically designed to increase compliance and improve titration ability for precise and accurate management of hyperthyroid cats.

“Thyronorm’s highly innovative dosage form, with added honey flavouring for even greater pet acceptance, is helping to maintain the pet-owner bond. The easier the medication is to give cats, the less stressful this is for the carer and the pet,” she says.

Thyronorm contains 5mg/ml of thiamazole (methimazole), a tried and trusted active ingredient in a novel formulation, proven to have in-vivo bioequivalence to thiamazole-containing tablets. The initial starting dose is 5mg active ingredient per day, split into two doses and made simple with a clearly marked dosing syringe.

Available in 30ml and 100ml bottles, with an in-use shelf life of six months, Thyronorm provides the simple solution to stabilisation of hyperthyroid cats prior to surgery or radioiodine therapy and the answer for those owners wishing to continue treating with medication for the long term. Thyronorm is available to order from all UK veterinary wholesalers.
