TOLFA Holi Cabaret Night Raises £2,000 To Help Animals In India

Tree of Life for Animals (TOLFA), a charity which runs an animal hospital and rescue centre in Rajasthan, India, has raised more than £2,000 to support its work by holding a Holi Cabaret Night in Covent Garden. Holi is an ancient Hindu Spring festival also known as the Festival of Colours. More than 60 guests attended the Cabaret which was held at the Club for Acts and Actors in Covent Garden on Saturday 22 March. They saw performances from acts including comedy band the Rudy Vees and bought Indian textiles, jewellery and handicrafts. Henna tattoos and a raffle were also on offer. During the evening, guests learnt more about TOLFA's work through a speech by Managing Trustee Dr Sue Bretherton. Following a visit to TOLFA's hospital, Dr Bretherton gave up her career as a head teacher to train as a vet in order to help animals in India. Rachel Wright, the British veterinary nurse who founded TOLFA in 2005, also addressed guests by video from India. Clara Nowak, UK Manager of TOLFA, said: "TOLFA's team of of local staff and international volunteers strives tirelessly to care for abandoned, sick and injured animals and to humanely control the stray dog population. Every day they care for more than 250 animals, many of which would have died under horrible circumstances on the streets had TOLFA not been there to rescue them. The team also runs free clinics for farmers and education programmes within schools and are involved with projects to eradicate rabies from the area. "The level of suffering in the animal population is high and funds are always tight so we're so grateful to everyone who supported the Holi Cabaret Night. We all had a fantastic time and the presentations gave everyone a real insight into everyday life at the TOLFA hospital. Most guests were both laughing and crying by the end!
