When you’ve anaesthetised a rare giant panda it’s unlikely you’ll face a bigger challenge in your career as a vet.

It’s certainly the standout case so far for anaesthetist Sam Lord, who’s just joined the highly-qualified team at award-winning Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield, West Yorkshire.

Sam will be working alongside RCVS and European specialists Liz Leece and Dr Alex Dugdale in an expanded anaesthesia department at Paragon, which is owned by Linnaeus.

Sam said: “Joining Paragon is a new challenge. I feel very excited to be work at such a busy, growing, and dynamic practice. The incredible team here make it a great place to be.

“My aims and ambitions in the new post include expanding and growing the anaesthesia service to provide the best possible perioperative care to our patients.

“I am also interested in education and teaching and would really like to be involved in the training and support of our incredible nursing team.”

Speaking about his experience with one of the planet’s rarest animals, Sam added: “The most memorable case of my career would be anaesthetising a giant panda at Edinburgh Zoo as part of my residency training. Getting close to such a rare animal was a real privilege.”

Sam has worked in academia for six years, most recently as a lecturer at Edinburgh University.

He graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2011 and spent three years in a large animal practice in West Yorkshire, before completing internships in equine medicine and surgery and small animal anaesthesia, both at the University of Liverpool.

He has spent the last four years at the University of Edinburgh, initially as a resident in anaesthesia and analgesia and latterly as a lecturer in veterinary anaesthesia. He will be sitting the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia Diploma exams this August.

Paragon’s Liz Leece, who heads the hospital’s chronic pain clinic, said: “We’re delighted to have Sam on board as we expand our service to cope with ever-increasing demand.

“Sam has certainly packed a lot into his career so far and his clinical experience and technical knowledge will make him a very valuable addition here at Paragon.”

Paragon’s multi-disciplinary care includes anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
