Another top cancer expert has joined the team at Southfields Veterinary Specialists in the latest development in the practice’s major expansion.

Sarah Mason, an RCVS and European specialist in veterinary oncology and formerly Principal Oncologist at the Queen's Veterinary School Hospital (QVSH), in Cambridge, has become Southfields’ Head of Oncology, as the Essex practice presses on with maintaining its position as the industry leader in medical and radiation oncology.

Dr Mason’s arrival this month follows the recent appointment of Jérôme Benoît, an American and European certified Veterinary Specialist in Radiation Oncology, as a consultant at Southfields.

Prior to training as a vet, Dr Mason worked as a cancer biologist, completing a BSc and PhD at the University of Glasgow and then undertaking post-doctoral research at Harvard Medical School, USA.

Dr Mason graduated as a vet from Liverpool in 2007 and worked in small animal practice for two years before returning to Liverpool to undertake a rotating internship. She remained at Liverpool and between 2010 and 2013 completed a Petsavers-sponsored residency in oncology.

In 2012, Dr Mason was awarded the RCVS Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice (Small Animal Medicine) and in 2014 the ECVIM Diploma in Veterinary Oncology.

Prior to taking up her position at QVSH in 2015, Dr Mason worked as a lecturer in oncology at the University of Liverpool.

Dr Mason is interested in all aspects of small animal oncology and has a particular clinical research interest in chemotherapy combinations of chemo and radiation therapy in canine and feline patients. She also has a strong interest in teaching and holds the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education.

She said: “I am excited to have joined Southfields to help shape both its medical and radiation-oncology services alongside Jérôme and the fantastic team of oncology experts and dedicated nurses there.”

Southfields’ operations manager Daniel Hogan said: “Sarah’s appointment is another indicator of the strong desire we have here at Southfields to provide the very best possible oncology treatment for our patients.”
