One of Europe’s leading veterinary cancer experts will be joining Southfields as head of radiation oncology in the latest step in the practice’s ongoing expansion and development.

Jérôme Benoît, an American and European certified Veterinary Specialist in Radiation Oncology, starts his consultancy for Southfields this month and his arrival will position the Laindon practice as one of the UK’s leading oncology centres.

After studying veterinary science at Lyon and Maisons-Alfort in his native France, Jérôme spent three years in the USA. A self-confessed ‘onco-maniac’ since his early years as a veterinary student, he fell in love with radio-oncology while in the US due to its exact physics and specific biology.

He completed a residency at North Carolina State University, passing his certifying examination in radiation oncology in 2010 (American College of Veterinary Radiology – Radiation Oncology). Jérôme, is also a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, Radiation Oncology (2015) and is the first RCVS-recognised expert in the field (2017).

He then spent five years working as a veterinary radiation oncologist at VRCC, which was rebranded as Southfields earlier this year, and then three years in France working in a leading veterinary cancer centre.

Jérôme said: “I am thrilled to be back at Southfields to help shape our radiation-oncology service alongside our new team of oncology experts and dedicated nurses.

“It is important to introduce and maintain the highest possible standards of care in radiotherapy from the start of the adventure, before Southfields continues its growth further and looks to implement new state-of-the-art equipment in the near future.”

Henry L’Eplattenier, clinical director at Southfields and chairman of the board of the prestigious European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS), said: “We’re absolutely delighted to be welcoming Jérôme to Southfields. He brings with him a wealth of experience and knowledge, which means our clients and patients will continue to receive the very best possible treatment.”

Southfields’ operations manager Daniel Hogan said: “Jérôme is one of the foremost practitioners of veterinary radiation oncology in Europe and a valuable addition to our growing team of top veterinary experts. We are delighted he has agreed to return as our head of radiotherapy.”

Part of the growing Linnaeus Group, Southfields is carrying out a full refurbishment of its existing Essex facilities and greatly extending its premises and staff, as well as installing new equipment.

It is recruiting more high-calibre specialist vets and will be significantly increasing its number of nurses and support staff.

In addition, a nurse training programme will be launched and the practice’s intern programme refreshed and enhanced. This is being accompanied by a six-month, three-phase programme of building works to create a new reception area, consultation room and medicine and surgery wards.

As the transition progresses, there will be the creation of new services and facilities such as a cat ward, X-ray department and endoscopy and chemotherapy facilities.
