Top New Leadership Team Takes Helm At Eastcott
The newly-appointed leadership team at a renowned Wiltshire veterinary centre has exciting plans to further expand the expert care offered to patients across the region.
Specialist Matt Gurney has been appointed clinical director at Linnaeus-owned Eastcott Veterinary Referrals in Swindon, one of the UK’s leading small animal hospitals, while Francisco Torres has taken on the same clinical leadership role at Eastcott’s popular primary care clinic.
Together, the pair are determined to further advance Eastcott as a recognised centre of excellence and expertise by forging a formidable team spirit and providing an even wider range of patient care and treatment options.
Matt, an RCVS recognised specialist and European diplomate in anaesthesia and analgesia, explained: “A central part of my role is to ensure there is a supportive environment throughout the hospital and to lead our specialist and clinical teams to continue delivering high quality care to pets across the area.
“I want to enhance and add to the key services we already provide, especially expanding our out of hours emergency service to offer local pets the care they need around the clock and to work with our dental and maxillofacial service to become a recognised centre of excellence.
“Another priority is to develop our pain clinic into a multidisciplinary service where pets benefit from the expertise of our pain specialists, physiotherapists, orthopaedic surgeons and neuro-surgeons.
“I will also act to grow our oncology service into a multidisciplinary team including surgeons, internal medicine specialists, radiologists and pain specialists.”
Pain management is a keen interest for Matt, who has moved to Eastcott from fellow Linnaeus animal hospital Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire.
He is co-founder of The Zero Pain Philosophy educational resource for veterinary professionals and an acknowledged expert in the field.
Matt added: “I am totally committed to alleviating acute and chronic pain while treating our sick and injured patients, which is fundamental to their quality of life, and our new pain clinic will be at the forefront of this vitally important field of pet care.
“The principles will be applied and embraced across all of our multi-disciplinary services at the hospital with our anaesthesia and analgesia team leading the way.
“It is certainly an exciting time to be at Eastcott and be part of such an enthusiastic team that has so many great ideas to expand and extend the gold standard, quality care we provide.”
Matt, who graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2003, is a past president of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia.
He lectures nationwide on a variety of topics including acid base balance, pain management, CPR and local anaesthesia and has contributed to the development of an app designed for veterinary surgeons and registered vet nurses on anaesthesia for dogs and cats.
Francisco, who has a Certificate of Advance Veterinary Practice and Postgraduate Certificate of Veterinary Professional Studies, said: “I am truly honoured and excited to be appointed as Eastcott primary care clinical director.
“This key role represents not only a culmination of years of dedication and hard work in the veterinary field but is also a unique opportunity to lead Eastcott’s talented team.
“I have a great passion to look after hospitalised patients and inpatient care. Something I love seeing is when a patient happily goes home after staying with us.
“That's why I want to drive forward a high standard clinical service, team wellbeing and the development of individual interests which will all help improve patient care.
“My main areas of interest are internal medicine and diagnostic imaging, while I have a passion for both animal welfare and team development.
“I am looking forward to implementing new initiatives, improving clinical protocols and developing a collaborative environment for the team where both team members and patients thrive.”
