Vet Andrew Draper from the Oak House Veterinary Centre in Mapperley is fundraising for diabetes charity JDRF, by taking part in the challenging London Nightrider cycle ride on Saturday 5 June 2016. Andrew’s 13 year old son, Jack, has Type 1 Diabetes and he is joining 27 other fathers of kids with the condition in cycling the route, which covers 100 km around the sights of London, starting at 11.00 pm. Participants set off from and finish at the Lee Valley Velopark.

Last year Andrew raised almost £2,000 for the charity by cycling coast to coast, from Morecambe on the west coast to Whitby on the east.

Five years ago, Jack, then eight years old, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Since then, he has had to have insulin therapy to keep him alive. Initially he was treated with four injections a day and, more recently, through an insulin pump. JDRF is a charity which works to improve the lives of people with Type 1 Diabetes and funds research for a cure.

Commenting, Andrew Draper said: "Following last year’s Coast to Coast ride, I wanted to set myself and my bike a different sort of challenge. The Nightrider event will be a great chance to meet up with the other fathers because we share so much experience of the difficulties facing kids living with Type 1 Diabetes and their families. We are aiming to raise £7,500 between us to help fund JDRF to carry out worldwide research."

He added: "We are just a group of normal Dads and will be helping each other round when the going gets tough. To help me prepare, I'm back in training on my bike around Woodborough and the surrounding villages.

"The fact that the ride takes place overnight won’t be a problem for us Diabetic Dads as we are often up at night checking our kids and adjusting their blood glucose levels with insulin. As a huge Beatles fan, I’m really looking forward to crossing the Abbey Road zebra crossing. I’m also looking forward to getting to the finishing line and tucking into a well-earned bacon butty!"

Andrew and his fellow Diabetic Dads have a just giving page at www.justgiving.com/CWDUK-Dads-2016/. Donations can also be made by texting DDAD50 and the amount to 70070.
