Dog toe injury Dog toe injury Veterinary Thermal Imaging (VTI) is delighted to be working with Pets Barn, a veterinary surgery providing care to the county of Gloucestershire through three practices. Pets Barn was founded in 1996 and has now grown to include three practices at Longhope, Hartpury and Forest of Dean. The veterinary group believes in compassionate care, quality and for value for money; three key areas that are important to VTI too. “I am thrilled to be working with Pets Barn on a regular basis,” says Jon Searle, VTI thermographer for Gloucestershire. “I’ll be working with the vets using specialist Infrared cameras that help locate the seat of pain or area of interest quickly and effectively, without the need for sedation. This service will complement Pets Barn’s current diagnostic procedure and will be used to provide additional and supportive evidence.” VTI provides a fully mobile, non-invasive thermal imaging service that can help highlight areas of interest up to three weeks before the animal exhibits clinical symptoms, such as lameness. The service works well for all species of animal but, in the case of companion animals, thermal imaging can be used to visually show back problems, joint issues, early detection of malignant growths, dental problems and even skin conditions. It can also be used to help illustrate the efficacy of a medicine or treatment. Thermal imaging maps heat patterns across the body, highlighting cooler and warmer areas. This information is then interpreted by a trained thermographer and can assist a vet in uncovering an underlying issue. As the camera used can detect temperature differences of less than 0.05 C and is fully portable, it can be used in the veterinary surgery or even in the pet’s home, removing the need for extra transportation. Another huge benefit is that there’s no need to sedate the animal as, should they move, the image can be retaken. This also means that areas can be explored in greater detail at the time. “Thermal Imaging is an exciting development, which we use alongside x-ray and ultrasound at Pets Barn,” said Nick Horniman MRCVS- clinical director of Pets Barn. “As a physiological imaging tool, it enables us to pinpoint the seat of injury or pathology quickly, accurately and in a completely non-invasive way; often sooner than we can positively identify these areas with our traditional anatomical imaging. It’s of particular use in shifting and intermittent lameness cases, enabling us to focus further investigative work on a narrower area of interest, which of course saves time, and our clients’ money. We use Veterinary Thermal Imaging, as the service is fully mobile and the thermographers are highly trained professionals.” To more information on Pets Barn and the services they offer through Gloucestershire, see www.petsbarn.co.uk.
