Drugs decommissioning, doubts over the importance of vaccinations, FSA regulations, a declining dog population, the potential of supermarkets supplying preventative drugs and increased competition are all causes for concern. With these various challenges facing every veterinary practice it has never been more important to take a proactive approach to business. The VetProtect Care Schemes offer surgeries an effective but easy tool to combat these issues. The experiences we gained from other industries show us that those businesses willing to take a pro-active approach to business survive and prosper no matter what the market forces are doing” There are two different products that a surgery can offer to clients. The first is the VetProtect Essential Care Scheme which allows customers to pay a monthly fee for membership to a routine preventative care programme which provides vaccinations, flea treatment, worm treatment and six month health checks. The second is the VetProtect Total Care Scheme which allows clients to pay a monthly fee for the routine preventative care programme as well as accident and illness cover of up to £5000 per year for life. Membership to the Essential Care Scheme is available to any cat or dog of any age. While membership to the Total Care Scheme is available to any cat or dog under ten, once a member cover is for life. Unlike traditional insurance premiums the VetProtect Total Care Scheme returns the majority of the money to the surgery. For example from a £20 monthly premium paid to a traditional insurance company the vet may only see £7 (if the claim is fulfilled at their surgery). The same premium collected by VetProtect would return £14.50 to the surgery. If a client makes a claim for an accident or illness the surgery then fulfils that claim after an initial excess has been paid by the client. The client therefore not only benefits from accident and illness cover but also a routine preventative care programme and all for the same price as traditional insurance. This type of capitation scheme has proved extremely successful in areas of private human medicine. This was especially true for dentistry, which has similar dynamics to the veterinary profession; there is very little NHS treatment available so people either face uncertainty or budget. The system is administered via software that has been especially developed for VetProtect and works in harmony with existing practice systems. The software registers the client, issues the VetProtect agreement, collects the direct debit payments, provides confirmation, keeps the appropriate records and offers reporting functionality. It also eliminates the need for customers or the surgery to use claims forms, which can save a lot of time. VetProtect train and support practise staff in terms of sales, marketing and compliance to ensure a maximum return from the scheme. The support has been developed so that all the surgeries need to do is what they are best at; treating animals and satisfying client’s needs.
