With the launch of their new Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (Companion Animal) earlier this year, Ofqual and CCEA approved awarding organisation, VetSkill, have been quick to respond to industry demand. With three advanced level 5 qualifications now available for delivery, it is a pioneering step forward for the veterinary nursing industry.

Three alternative qualifications are to be offered as Level 5 Diplomas in Advanced Veterinary Nursing, each concentrating on a different area of special interest (Medical, Surgical and Practice Nurse). The recognised qualifications are expected to take 12 months to complete and are assessed by a combination of online written exams, skills portfolio, and case scenarios, assignments and practical exams.

Feedback from the initial consultation on the proposed qualifications was extremely positive. All respondents agreed that they allowed the practice of higher skills and benefitted career progression. 96% agreed that skills based qualifications in these subjects are necessary and/or useful.

Sam McMillan, Qualifications Manager, presented on the subject at The College of Animal Welfare Head Nurse Congress on 11 May. Following the event, Sam stated: “It’s an exciting time within the veterinary nursing industry and to be involved in the creation of such iconic qualifications.” She added: “we’re thrilled with the positive reaction gained by the industry and are confident that developing these skills based qualifications will give veterinary nurses the opportunity for further career growth and improve nurse retention in the industry”.

High demand is anticipated for these qualifications, so if you are keen to become a recognised VetSkill training Centre that is approved deliver these, please visit: www.vetskill.com or call 01480 278580 to find out more.
