An award-winning Yorkshire animal hospital has picked up another national prize in recognition of its eco-friendly practices and sustainability programmes.

Linnaeus-owned Paragon Veterinary Referrals in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, has been accredited as a silver-level practice by Investors in the Environment (iiE).

iiE is a nationwide initiative that encourages firms to transform their working practices to introduce more environmentally-friendly, cleaner and more sustainable methods and systems.

The silver prize comes a year after Paragon was awarded bronze-level accreditation, just six months after registering for the scheme.

The audit report praised Paragon’s development of its environmental management system and its concerted efforts to drive down resource usage.

It singled out clinical director Sophie Adamantos for praise, highlighting her work to lead changes across the organisation to improve environmental performance.

This includes the creation of specific targets and actions to reduce environmental impact; with sustainability actions incorporated into team leader objectives to give staff the tools to enact change.

The inspectors also praised Paragon for its excellent waste reduction efforts and other initiatives, including planting insect-friendly plants and running an antimicrobial stewardship programme.

Sophie said: “We’ve introduced a raft of changes at the practice since we started on our journey with Investors in the Environment, including reducing single-use items; replacing disposable theatre hats with fabric versions and moving to paper-free HR processes.

“We also added recycling bins to clinical areas and removed personal bins from offices to encourage people to recycle more.

“This latest accreditation is further proof the changes are having a meaningful impact across our hospital and the next stage is to go for the iiE green award, the highest level award it offers.”

Paragon provides expert care in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and soft tissue surgery.
