Extracted from an article entitled 'A comparison of earnings across professions' - An analysis of the earning of veterinarians requires looking separately at employed vets and at partners in veterinary practices as earnings differ considerably depending on their position. It should also be noted that vets are employed in other capacities (at universities, government departments e.g. DEFRA etc) which have not been taken into account in this analysis. The table below summarises the earnings of veterinary assistants (employed vets) in 2004/05. This table indicates that salary progression within the profession is very limited for those vets who do not establish or buy into a partnership. A newly qualified vet can expect a salary of around £28,500 (up to £39,500 max) with their earnings peaking 8 to 10 years into their career at around £42,000 (£59,000 max). These earnings figures represent total remuneration and include benefits in kind such as cars, accommodation, CPD expenses etc. Earnings of employed veterinarians
