A Wiltshire animal hospital is celebrating the success of one of its ophthalmologists who has passed her European Diploma exams to become a European College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ECVO) specialist.

Katherine Manchip joined Swindon-based Eastcott Veterinary Referrals in 2020 and is the hospital’s first ECVO specialist.

For Katherine, her life-long love of ophthalmology coupled with her passion for helping animals has led her to receiving this specialist status.

She said: “I have quite a few ‘human’ eye surgeons in the family, so I’d say my love of ophthalmology has been manifesting since I was a little girl.

“I am thrilled to have achieved specialist status and I am really looking forward to using all my knowledge and skills for the benefit of my clients and their pets.”

Katherine’s career began at a small animal practice in London where she worked for four years, before completing a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College and an ophthalmology residency at South Devon Referrals in Newton Abbott in 2020.

Through the years, she has developed a particular interest in helping pets overcome cataract issues, enabling them to view life through a clearer lens.

She added: “The beauty of our role as veterinary surgeons is that we see our patients through right until the end, with follow up appointments post-surgery. It’s a real privilege to be able to help these animals in the way we do, and I look forward to helping more in the months to come.”

Duncan Barnes, clinical director at Eastcott Veterinary Referrals, said: “We are incredibly proud of Katherine’s achievement and extend our fullest congratulations to her.

“Since joining us, she has been phenomenal in her role and to achieve this status while giving a 100 per cent in her role is truly outstanding and something which we salute her for!”

Eastcott offers specialist expert care in cardiology, dentistry, internal medicine, ophthalmology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, oncology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery, laparoscopy, neurology, diagnostic imaging, CT and MRI, anaesthesia and analgesia and emergency and critical care.
