The owners of a Siamese cat have thanked vets for saving their pet’s life after he was run over by a driver who did not stop.

Two-year-old Loki managed to get himself back to his home in Erdington, Birmingham, after the incident, despite being unable to walk.

The poorly feline was rushed to local vets by owners Rachael Norton-Voysey and Tim Mundriona, who were Loki had a diaphragmatic hernia – which caused his organs to move upwards into his chest.

He was referred to Linnaeus-owned West Midlands Veterinary Referrals (WMR) near Burton, where orthopaedic and soft tissue clinician Marcin Rogalski confirmed the hernia and dislocation of Loki’s pelvis.

Veterinary surgeon Marcin said: “We kept Loki on oxygen and operated to reduce the pressure on the diaphragm and repair damage from the hernia, which allowed him to breathe normally.

“He stayed with us for several days receiving intensive nursing care, until he was ready to go home. We’re really glad to say he is healing well so far.”

Owner Rachael is currently having her garden ‘cat-proofed’, so her two pets can go outdoors safely.

And while Loki is not enjoying crate rest, he is making the most of all the extra attention.

Rachael said: “Since the accident, both of our cats have been locked in and we are having work done to our garden so they can go out safely. People drive far too fast where we live and no-one ever came forward to admit hitting Loki.

“He is improving every day but hates being put in the crate overnight – he thinks we are putting him in prison. He is really enjoying being carried everywhere the rest of the time though and having the softest and best spot on the sofa.

“Loki has come on leaps and bounds and is eating as well as before and beginning to walk again.

“We’re incredibly grateful to staff at WMR all they have done for Loki and us, they were so patient and caring with a picky cat and very worried owners. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have Loki with us today.”

WMR provides a wide range of high standard veterinary services delivered by experienced clinicians and supported by state-of-the-art facilities to facilitate accurate diagnosis and treatment.
