Colic will be a key topic on the scientific programme at this year’s BEVA Congress 11-14 September 2019. Global names in gastroenterology will be sharing their latest knowledge to help vets and vet nurses to support the work of the BHS and Nottingham University’s current REACT to colic campaign. This initiative aims to help vets and horse owners work together for the best options for colic patients.

On Friday 13th September there will be a full two hours of the morning devoted to gastroenterology. Chaired by Harry Carslake diplomate of the American College of Veterinary internal medicine (ACVIM), the session will involve five leading experts speaking about aspects of colic, followed by discussion and the opportunity for questions from delegates.

·      Natasha Jocelyn, Internal Medicine Specialist, Sussex Equine Hospital, will speak about managing the acute colic in the field: what to do when flunixin doesn’t work.

·      Prof. Dr. Gunther Van Loon European Veterinary Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium, will discuss managing acute colic in the equine hospital.

·      Dr Nathan Slovis member of the American College of Internal Veterinary Medicine, Director of the McGee Medicine Department and a partner at Haygard Equine Medical Institute in Lexington, Ky will explain colic guidelines – can ‘algorithms’ help?

·      Prof. Dr Lutz Goehring European Veterinary Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, Ludwig-Maximilians University Munich, will explore the question ‘is there an evidence-based approach to managing enteritis?’

·      David Rendle European Veterinary Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine, Rainbow Equine Hospital, North Yorkshire, will look at parasitic disease as a cause of colic and methods of management.

BEVA Congress is Europe’s largest equine veterinary conference. It will be held this year at the ICC Birmingham. Organised by a committee of equine vets for the profession it brings together more than 1200 equine vets and nurses, internationally lauded speakers and 100+ exhibitors for three days of knowledge-sharing, networking, workshops, demonstrations and practical sessions. It presents the opportunity to acquire more than 90 hours of premium quality CPD.

The REACT to colic campaign was devised by the British Horse Society and The University of Nottingham to help horse owners combat the life-threatening condition of colic.  More than 60 veterinary practices around the UK have signed up to become Vet REACT Colic Champions. Throughout the year they will be helping to provide advice, presentations and resources on all issues related to colic to their clients. https://www.bhs.org.uk/our-work/welfare/our-campaigns/react/vet-react-colic-champions
