Boehringer Ingelheim launch first POM-V medicine recycling programme for UK equine veterinary practices
Boehringer Ingelheim Launch First POM-V Medicine Recycling Programme For UK Equine Veterinary Practices
Equine veterinary surgeons across the UK can now do more help reduce plastic waste, thanks to a new Aservo® EquiHaler® recycling programme from Boehringer Ingelheim.
Many practices are taking positive steps to drive environmental sustainability, but the recycling of plastics across both human and animal medicine has long presented a challenge. A review published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine found that plastics make up approximately 30% of all healthcare waste.1
UK veterinarians are primed to address this challenge though, with 89% of the profession stating that they wished to play a more active role in the sustainability agenda.2
As a global animal health company, Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health (BIAH) recognizes its responsibility to create a healthier world for future generations. In line with their valued principle of protecting the environment, BIAH recognises the important role they play in supporting the veterinary industry to tackle this issue.
During the development and 2020 launch of the Aservo® EquiHaler® BIAH utilized the opportunity to incorporate sustainability into the heart of this product.
The first-of-its-kind inhaler uses Soft Mist™ Technology, which allows the medication to be inhaled deep into the horse’s lungs, and through avoidance of propellant gas does not emit greenhouse gasses through usage. Moreover, the Equihaler itself is made from up to 50%-recycled materials – a key development for the veterinary market.
Launch of new Aservo® EquiHaler® POM-V recycling scheme
To further the ethical principles that guide the company, BIAH have launched the first recycling programme for a prescription medicine in the UK to support the responsible disposal of the Aservo® EquiHaler®.
Through the Aservo® EquiHaler® recycling programme, and inhaler itself, BIAH have considered the impact of the product at every stage.
How can practices register?
Practices can join the programme by visiting the Aservo® EquiHaler® Recycling Programme site, setting up a TerraCycle® account and registering their practice - it only takes 10 minutes! Once signed-up, a Boehringer Ingelheim Territory Manager will arrange for a collection box to be delivered, along with supporting practice display posters. Once ready, each practice can book a free pick-up service.
Practices that sign-up for the programme before 31st July 2021 will be entered into a free prize draw, with the chance to win a year’s supply of ethically-sourced chocolate for their practice.
To find out more about the scheme and to sign-up, go to https://equihaler.uk/recycling or talk to your Boehringer Ingelheim Territory Manager.
