An Irish vet practice has been honoured with a prestigious international award for its high quality of care for cats.

Primrose Hill Veterinary Hospital, in County Dublin, has been recognised as a silver level cat-friendly clinic (CFC) by the International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM).

One of Primrose Hills’ cat advocates, nursing team member Josceline Cairns, said the prestigious award for its practice is recognition of their determination to deliver the very highest standards of care for all cats visiting them.

Josceline said: “We are delighted to have gained a silver ISFM award in recognition of the measures we have taken to ensure our feline patients receive the utmost care.

“It is a fitting reward for everyone’s hard work and dedication. A fantastic team effort all round.”

Fellow cat advocate Anne Vockeroth, a veterinary surgeon, explained the strict criteria which Primrose Hill needed to attain to achieve the award, adding: “The ISFM has tough criteria to meet in order to gain its silver accreditation, and rightly so.

“The initiative examines the provision of facilities and staff activities and attitudes to reducing stress in cats when in our care, whether that is as an in-patient or out-patient.

“Its criteria include having separate dog and cat waiting areas, veterinary equipment specifically for treating cats and feline-friendly hospitalisation cages.

“Furthermore, we had to clearly show that the team here at Primrose Hill understands the needs of cats and always strive to make visits to us cat-friendly and stress free.

“High standards of veterinary care are also expected to be maintained at the practice, including continuing to update our knowledge of feline medicine as new knowledge becomes available.”

Specific measures to gain the accreditation saw new and improved separate cat kennels, including pheromone diffusers in the kennels and raised platforms for cats that prefer to be high up.

The practice also introduced a stress-free waiting room for cats by adding blankets and pheromone sprays, separate from the dog waiting area, while it also uses bath mats on examination tables, so cats have a soft surface to stand on.

The ISFM launched the cat-friendly clinic initiative to encourage veterinary clinics to make changes to improve the welfare of cats in their care.
