Small animal specialist and clinical cardiologist Jon Wray, a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, has joined Linnaeus-owned Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Essex.

An eminent veterinary specialist has teamed up with one of the country’s leading small animal hospitals to form a formidable partnership.
Small animal specialist and clinical cardiologist Jon Wray, a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, has joined Linnaeus-owned Southfields Veterinary Specialists in Basildon, Essex.
It’s an impressive addition to the specialist-led multidisciplinary team at Southfields, which last year moved into a new £16 million, 42,000 sq ft building, making it one of the largest and best equipped veterinary referral centres in Britain.
Jon’s certainly looking forward to working alongside his new colleagues, saying: “I am very excited to move to Southfields and join the stellar cardiology and internal medicine teams in such a state-of-the-art building with world-leading facilities.
“I am joining as clinician in cardiology and a consultant Specialist in small animal internal medicine, with also provision of interventional radiology services, an area in which I have been privileged to be amongst the vanguard of vets to offer in the United Kingdom for the last 10 years.
“I have 25 years of experience offering internal medicine, cardiology and interventional radiology referral services, many of those spent in the South East.
“I now hope to contribute to developing further the service to our referring colleagues, their patients and pet owners here at Southfields Veterinary Specialists.”
It is a significant appointment for Southfields, with Jon widely regarded as being at the forefront of the UK’s veterinary specialists.
His clinical practice covers all aspects of internal medicine and cardiology, although he does have a keen interest in certain key areas.
Jon explained: “I’m specifically interested in the investigation and management of dysphagia, endocrine dwarfism, diagnostic and therapeutic interventional endoscopy, congenital heart disease, pericardial disease, interventional cardiology and interventional radiology.”
A quarter of a century’s dedication to referral veterinary services has brought him some significant accolades, honours and key responsibilities along the way.
In 2018, his outstanding contribution to the profession saw him made a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS), and in the same year he was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and listed as a Chartered Biologist.
AUTHOR
He is the author of the book ‘Canine Internal Medicine: What’s Your Diagnosis?’ and is a visiting lecturer at the Universities of Copenhagen and Lusofona (Lisbon).
He has published widely and lectured nationally and internationally in internal medicine, cardiology, veterinary education and interventional radiology.
He is also a past chief examiner for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons certificate and diploma in small animal medicine, and the certificate of advanced veterinary practice for the University of Liverpool.
Jon also speaks regularly in clinical reasoning and cognitive error as applied to small animal veterinary practice as he passes on the expertise he’s accumulated over a glittering career.
Southfields hospital director Dan Hogan welcomed Jon to the team, saying: “Jon’s an incredibly well-respected clinician and we’re delighted to welcome him to the team here at Southfields.
“His wealth of experience and knowledge speaks for itself and his arrival will only serve to further enhance our industry-leading cardiology and internal medicine offerings.”
Jon graduated from the University of Bristol in 1996 and, after two years in a mixed, general (mainly cattle and small animal) practice in Bath and north-east Somerset, returned to the University of Bristol to perform a three-year residency in small animal medicine.
In 2001, he moved to Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service in Solihull, West Midlands, which is also owned by Linnaeus, and in 2004 he joined the canine medicine referral service at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket and went on to become their head of internal medicine.
Jon then returned to the University of Bristol as clinical fellow in cardiorespiratory medicine before joining another Linnaeus practice, Dick White Referrals, in 2008 as a specialist in small animal medicine and subsequently head of cardiology. In 2021, Jon moved back to Willows where he was appointed clinical director.
Outside of work, Jon enjoys travelling, live music, playing the guitar and spending time with his three children messing around in kayaks, boards and swimming in rivers and the sea.
