Basic physio for happier pets!
Even Basic Physio For Pets Reaps Amazing Benefits
Author: Jill Macdonald |
I recently tagged along with the first intake of our 'Introduction to Veterinary Physiotherapy for the Geriatric Patient' course run by ONCORE, and I was amazed at just how much we can do for older patients (dogs and cats) simply by using some basic physiotherapy techniques. I have a 16 yo border terrier, and he's had OA for quite a while - I practised all of the things we learnt, and we have seen such a change in him. He's brighter, more mobile, sleeping less, and also really enjoys his sessions! (I posted lots of updates on our facebook page). It's simple stuff like effleurage and petrissage, stretches, Range of Movement exercises, building core strength by standing on uneven surfaces such as a foam cushion.... and it REALLY works! As one of my friends called it - 'pilates for dogs'! The other bonus is that is gives us (vets and nurses) another service that we can offer to our clients to help their pets - whilst also teaching them some of the basic things that they can continue to use at home. I love this course! The only downside is that I so wish I'd learned some of this stuff when I was in practice - I would have been so excited to set up my geriatric clinics with this information under my belt...
We have another cohort starting on Monday 15th August - if you'd like to join us (or know someone that would) then please get in touch - [email protected], tel 0121 663 1971, or complete our registration form here (to register, or just for more information)
