One of the UK’s leading veterinary eye clinics has invested to introduce even more technology to help treat pets troubled by ocular problems.

Linnaeus-owned Eye Vet Referrals in Sutton Weaver, Cheshire, has added a state-of-the-art ocular surface analyser, which is now helping diagnose a wide range of serious eye problems and disorders suffered by its patients.

Eye Vet clinical director Iona Mathieson, an advanced practitioner in veterinary ophthalmology, said the hi-tech, non-invasive instrument could provide detailed images and video to accurately identify the cause of an animal’s eye problems.

Iona said: “At Eye Vet, we are always striving to deliver gold standard care to our patients and the interferometer is an excellent addition to our advanced diagnostic equipment.

“It is a superb instrument that helps us examine pets for a whole variety of eye problems.

“On the ocular surface it highlights corneal and conjunctival disease concerns and can also identify problems with the lacrimal glands, tear film, eyelids and their meibomian glands.

“Using the ocular surface analyser allows us to perform a non-invasive, pain free examination which means patients don’t need to be hospitalised or anaethetised.

“It is perfect for cases of pets suffering from red eye, chronic ocular discharge, ocular discomfort, recurrent corneal ulcers, dry eye and disorders of the lacrimal system.”

Iona said the equipment can also use video interferometry to examine the tear film-lipid layer thickness and dynamics to prevent evaporative dry eye (EDE) and focus on tear meniscus to evaluate tear meniscus height (TMH), which estimates the tear volume as a reservoir of tear fluid.

It can also be used to evaluate non-invasive break-up time (NIBUT) by monitoring the time elapsed between a blink and the appearance of a real discontinuity in the Tear Film.

“We can video or photograph the ocular surface topography to help ensure a normal surface and tear film stability, which are essential for a healthy eye,” added Iona. “Similarly, we can use it to examine meibomian gland dysfunctions, evaporative dry eye (EDE) and qualitative dry eye.

“It delivers very precise and specific images with the results normally available the following day, making it quick, easy and, most importantly, extremely accurate in diagnosing any problems.”

Eye Vet Referrals is a fully-equipped ophthalmic practice with cutting edge equipment to provide the highest standard of care for pets.
