St George’s University, in the Caribbean island of Grenada, has announced its first three Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarships. Sixty Commonwealth Jubilee Scholarships are on offer – one for each of the Queen’s years as Head of the Commonwealth and commemorating last year’s diamond jubilee. The scholarships were launched in November 2012 by the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Kamalesh Sharma. The Secretary-General acknowledged St George’s University’s “contribution to advancing education” in the Commonwealth. The winning scholars are Kershelle Hilaire, from Trinidad and Tobago in the Masters of Public Health programme; Douglas Dankor from Ghana in the Doctor of Medicine programme; and Ashleigh McLeish from South Africa for a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The scholars qualified for the August 2013 entering class at the University. “These full tuition scholarships are a significant achievement for the students concerned”, commented Margaret Lambert, Dean of Enrolment Planning. “We have had some excellent entries and I am confident that we will be announcing awards in the near future”. The University has a strong relationship with the Commonwealth. Currently there are 5,111 students and graduates from Commonwealth countries. St George’s University’s first Commonwealth Scholarships were offered in 2006 when the University celebrated its 30th anniversary. Dean Lambert stressed that an objective of the scholarships was to encourage scholars to return to their own countries of origin after their degree awards. “As far as possible, we want to reverse the professional brain drain”, she said. St George’s University is recognised as an international centre of higher education and draws its students and faculty from 140 countries. Over 13,000 physicians, veterinarians, scientists, public health and business professionals have graduated from the university since it was founded 37 years ago.
