A virtual open day about rotating internships is taking place on Tuesday 23 May, with more than 20 speakers taking part in 12 presentations, live demonstrations and panel discussions between 9am and 8pm.

Internships Explained: Unleash Your Potential is hosted by veterinary group Linnaeus and the career support organisation, Vets: Stay, Go, Diversify. Delegates will be able to interact with the speakers and access as many of the free sessions as they wish throughout the day.

Key speakers at the event include Toby Trimble, founder of Trimble Productions and a Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia, who will be advising on public speaking. Jonny Hughes, Diagnostic Imaging Specialist at Davies Veterinary Specialists, will lead an interactive session reviewing radiographs from four real-life cases. Meanwhile Emily Thomas, Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care at Dick White Referrals, will appraise recent cases she has seen with her intern team.

Career experiences and advice will be shared by a live panel of current rotating interns. A separate session features residency programme directors offering their tips for successfully applying to a residency post. The directors represent hospitals across the UK, including North Downs Specialist Referrals, Eastcott Referrals, Wear Referrals, Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists, and Willows Veterinary Centre and Referral Service. Linnaeus has more than 110 residents across its referral hospitals.

Attendees can also watch live sessions with interns and specialists performing diagnostics and procedures, including a laparoscopic spay at Eastcott and an echocardiographic exam at Anderson Moores.

Natasha Hetzel, Internship and Residency Manager at Linnaeus, said:

“This is the perfect opportunity to hear from peers who have completed a rotating internship, and watch live sessions showcasing the teaching that interns receive. Attendees will also receive support from experts on the internship application process, including a chance to book 1.1 sessions with internship directors for further advice.

“The event will also consider routes into residencies and becoming a specialist, as these are popular career routes for interns. However, an internship is also an excellent way to develop the skills and knowledge for a career in primary care.”

The sessions can count as CPD for a year after the event. Attendees unable to join on the day can still register to watch the recorded sessions.

Ebony Escalona, Founder of Vets: Stay, Go, Diversify, added:

“A rotating internship is a great gateway to a myriad of career opportunities. It allowed me to return as a more confident GP as well as enabling me to step into academic positions too. This event will allow the vet community to gain clarity on what an internship at Linnaeus entails as well as a taste of the world-class training and mentoring you will receive, plus tips on how to successfully apply. All available to watch back after the day too!"

Linnaeus supports 75 rotating interns and 35 discipline-specific interns across its network of 17 UK referral hospitals. The group also offers more than 110 residencies across 10 disciplines, from anaesthesia to zoo medicine.
