Ruby Shorrock at Paragon Veterinary Referrals
Landmark 100 Residencies At Linnaeus Celebrated With New Emergency Care Programme

The arrival of a new ophthalmology resident at Wakefield-based Paragon Veterinary Referrals means veterinary group Linnaeus now has 100 residents based across its national network of referral hospitals.
Ruby Shorrock previously worked in Glasgow and at Park Vet Group in Leicestershire, before starting her ophthalmology internship at the Animal Health Trust. She then completed her internship at Linnaeus-owned Paragon and has now progressed to a residency at the hospital.
Originally from Derby, Ruby is also a keen endurance and long-distance cyclist, having completed a 285-mile ride throughout July, including 100 miles in one day, in support of the British Red Cross.
“I was interested in working at a multidisciplinary hospital to combine my interest in clinical research with practical casework,” said Ruby.
“Progressing into a residency means that I’ll be able to focus more on academia with the support of our clinical research team, while learning new skills from my colleagues and taking on greater responsibility for the care of our patients.
“I really enjoyed working at Park and have been warmly welcomed by the Paragon team. As a feline fan, I’m keen to focus on cats and take the lead in their treatment.”
As part of this national network of 100 residencies, Dick White Referrals in Cambridgeshire is also introducing a new Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) programme for two new residents.
Emily Thomas, ECC Specialist at Dick White Referrals, said: “We already offer a successful and well-established emergency care internship programme and the team is expanding, so it seemed like the perfect time to start training residents in ECC. It’s an exciting opportunity for us to deliver the right balance of caseload and teaching for our residents to thrive and learn.”
There are 12 referral hospitals* across Linnaeus offering residencies across 10 disciplines, ranging from anaesthesia to zoo medicine. The group also supports 75 rotating interns and 35 discipline-specific interns, who are able to progress into residency programmes and train as specialists.

“Having so many residents at Linnaeus brings a huge wealth of knowledge to the group and supports the high-quality care we offer our patients. It also offers our interns opportunities to progress into a residency if they want to explore that route in their career.
“Last year, 61% of our rotating interns pursuing specialist track roles moved directly into discipline-specific internships or residencies, while 78% of our discipline-specific interns gained residency posts straight out of their internship. Our aim is to offer a wide range of career opportunities across our referral and primary care network.”
