One of the UK’s leading referral vet centres is set to move to a new £11 million, state-of-the-art premises next year.

Southfields Veterinary Specialists, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, has been given the green light to embark on a major project to convert a 40,000 sq ft site just miles down the road from its current Essex premises into what is set to be one of the UK’s largest centres when it opens its doors.

The project will see more than £11 million invested by Southfields and Linnaeus, backed by Mars Petcare, with facilities including a cutting-edge imaging suite, state-of-the-art treatment facilities and a new linear accelerator.

As well as new equipment, plans for the practice include separate cat and dog waiting areas and client walking and comfort areas, seven operating theatres, 15 consultation rooms, recovery suites, lecture halls, a dedicated ICU department and plans for a future hydrotherapy suite.

Daniel Hogan, operations manager at Southfields, said the new centre would also see team numbers virtually double.

He said: “This is a really exciting time for Southfields and our relocation will provide the region with one of the largest and best-equipped veterinary centres in the UK.

“The team and expertise have grown significantly in the past 18 months. We are very excited to continue to expand the unique and innovative offerings in patient care at our centre.

“Increasing in size will also enable us to provide a dedicated staff wellbeing area and an education centre and lecture hall, which will offer some very exciting qualifications and courses for the wider profession.

“Since our rebranding in 2017, we pride ourselves on leading the industry as a truly multidisciplinary centre with specialists from across the globe, including one of the most illustrious oncology teams in the country. Once this new site is launched, we will be able to offer an even more comprehensive service to our clients and patients.”

Emma Barnes, chief operating officer at Linnaeus, said the investment in Southfields’ new site showed the group’s commitment to excellence for its brands.

She said: “This move is a reflection of the ambition of Southfields, Linnaeus and Mars to continue providing the very best veterinary care in the UK.

“The new site will be one of the largest in the country and seemed a logical next step once it was clear to us that Southfields would soon outgrow its current premises.

“Plans are now moving forward apace and we look forward to seeing the new site open its doors next year.”

Southfields is already one of only a few specialist centres in the country to have a linear accelerator and its new site will offer advanced treatments in radiation working closely with colleagues across the globe.

Earlier this year, it launched the innovative #pawsforcancer campaign, which encourages people whose pets have undergone treatment for cancer at Southfields to share photos of their animals on social media enjoying life post-treatment.
