A Yorkshire vet practice is celebrating after receiving national recognition for its environmental work and drive to cut its carbon footprint.

Peak Vets, in Sheffield, has been awarded bronze accreditation by Investors in the Environment (iiE), a nationwide initiative which encourages firms to introduce cleaner, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly ways of working.

Led by the practice’s dedicated green team, Linnaeus-owned Peak Vets has introduced a raft of measures to reduce energy use and cut its reliance on single-use items.

Bethany Allen, a registered vet nurse and ‘green lead’ at Peak said: “We are delighted to receive a bronze award in recognition of our efforts to be more sustainable, to reduce our carbon footprint and cut down on waste.

“We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our business and have introduced a number of measures throughout the practice.

“We are taking regular meter readings to monitor our use of gas and electricity in order to be more efficient as well as working to cut our use of anaesthetic gases and levels of clinical waste.

“We’ve introduced a waste management system that’s segregated into general, mixed, recycling, food and clinical and are keenly looking at alternatives for common items of waste.

“Our operating theatre staff have already switched to re-usable scrub hats for surgical work, we’ve switched from tin foil to reusable socks for helping keep our pet patients warm and have replaced blue sheet paper rolls for cloths.

“We’ve also moved to enhance our biodiversity by introducing a bee-friendly garden and have been supporting local charities, including a £1,000 fundraising donation to the local RSPCA.”

The iiE audit praised the practice for developing such “a good environmental policy” and has highlighted areas where Peak Vets can make even more progress in the future, with the prospect of an ultimate Green award as the encouragement.

The experienced vets and nurses at Peak Vets, in Olivet Road, Sheffield, deliver a full primary care service seven days a week, with the practice open until 9pm on weekdays.
