Practice Launches New Exotics Service

Oakmount Veterinary Centre, part of the IVC Evidensia network, has launched a new exotics service as well as an online exotics’ shop.
Based in Burnley, the new service is headed up by Clinical Director, Sheryl Calway (BVMS, MRCVS, GpCert PgC Ex AP). Sheryl is delighted to be at the forefront of this exciting new department and said,
“My true passion has always been working with exotic animals. I am constantly amazed by the huge variety of animals that people keep as pets and I feel very privileged to be able to help keep them happy and healthy.”
The services on offer at Oakmount Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery include:
· Gold standard and bespoke medical and surgical facilities for all exotic species
· An online shop for all things exotic
· Husbandry consultations
· Pre and post hibernation checks
· Dentistry
· Soft tissue, orthopaedic and shell repair
· Diagnostics such as radiography, ultrasound and endoscopy
· Blood testing, microscopy, histopathology, cytology, microbiology, culture and bacterial antibiotic sensitivity testing
· Routine faecal and parasite screening
· Reproduction management
· Behavioural advice
To make sure patients and owners are comfortable and their visits to Oakmount Veterinary Centre are as stress-free as possible, there are separate prey and predator wards, consult room and operating theatre.
Helping Sheryl in the practice is veterinary nurse, Karen Antrobus. Karen joined Oakmount as a volunteer at just 15 years old. At 18, she was employed by the practice and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2000. As well as being a qualified nurse, Karen is also a hydrotherapist. She said,
“I am so excited to be involved in this new venture. Working with exotic animals really does mean that no two days are the same and each animal we see comes with its own challenges to keep us on our toes.”
The team are also involved in caring for sick and injured wildlife as well as animals living on the streets. Sheryl said,
“Another privilege is being involved in looking after wildlife locally. I am also an active volunteer for Street Paws, which is a charity providing free veterinary care for animals living in poverty or on the street with their homeless owners.”
Sheryl and Karen have also welcomed vet Jude Ungaretti-Cross recently. Jude is a 2021 graduate with a strong interest in exotics who will be trained up to add to this terrific team, providing gold standard care to any exotic animal in the northwest.
