Specialist Matt Joins Dick White Referrals

One of the UK’s leading animal hospitals has added another top specialist to its highly-qualified and experienced veterinary team.
Dr Matthew Eayrs has joined Linnaeus-owned Dick White Referrals (DWR), based in Six Mile Bottom, Cambridgeshire, where he’s been appointed consultant in orthopaedic surgery.
Matt joins from fellow Linnaeus referral centre, Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists in Hampshire. He said he is keen to grow the orthopaedic service at DWR and to further add to his own skill set.
Matt, who is an RCVS and European specialist in small animal surgery, said: “I’m very pleased and excited to be taking up this new role at DWR.
“My main ambition is to expand the orthopaedic service, including introducing total joint replacement surgeries, starting with hip replacements.
“To achieve this I will be attending the industry-leading Biomedtrix total hip replacement course to be able to add this skill set into my clinical practice.
“I’ll also be focusing on minimising the impact of surgical intervention on patient welfare, surgical management of trauma patients, arthroscopy and correction of angular limb deformity.”
Matt has already experienced the benefits of using modern techniques and technology to transform the lives of sick or injured pets, including a standout case of angular limb deformity.
He said: “My most memorable case to date was a Scottish Terrier called Loki who had a deformity of his right thoracic limb.
“This was corrected with the aid of custom 3D printed bone models, cutting and reduction guides and custom 3D printed titanium plates.
“Prior to surgery the function of this limb was severely compromised, but surgery achieved our aims of restoring excellent pain-free function, allowing Loki to have a normal, very active life.”
Matt’s consultant position also has a management and educational aspect attached to it. He said: “My key responsibilities will be the management of the orthopaedic case load, the training of residents and future specialist veterinary surgeons, and the provision of career professional development and advice to colleagues on the topic of orthopaedic surgery.
“It’s a full brief and I’m really looking forward to this exciting new opportunity.”
DWR recently announced it is undergoing a £15 million transformation which will see it treble in size.
Clinical director Simon Tappin said: “We’re delighted to welcome Matt. His arrival brings even more expertise and skill to our already highly-qualified and experienced team.
“As we continue to grow, with our impending expansion into our new building, having specialists like Matt within our team will be central to our ability to continue providing quality clinical care to our patients.”
