A surgical veterinary nurse has chosen Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM) to praise the team at a Leeds animal hospital who have helped her pursue her career.

Cassandra Houghton joined Linnaeus-owned Abbey House as a locum last year and was quickly offered a permanent position.

Dentistry is Cassandra’s favourite discipline and she is keen to highlight the support she has been offered to pursue her passion which, in turn, has allowed her to support the Abbey House team.

She said: “Abbey House has embraced my skills and knowledge, allowing me to support the team in developing their skills, understanding and increasing their passion for dentistry. This ultimately improves our dentistry service with better outcomes for patients and satisfied clients.

“I particularly enjoy dentistry and routinely perform dental radiography and probing and charting to support vets with their treatment plan, scaling and polishing, and placing local anaesthetic blocks. I always enjoy teaching my colleagues about dentistry and have delivered in-house CPD.

“There is also such a wide range of cases to see, ensuring my role stays interesting and I actually get to use the skills and knowledge I worked hard to gain.”

Cassandra was inspired to pursue dentistry after working with dental radiographs and how radiography helps treat patients to feel better.

“Seeing happier, pain-free patients, made me fall in love with dentistry. I originally did the BVNA oral care nurse certificate, which inspired me to do my NCert.

“I feel empowered at work as my team can reach out to me for help and advice, and I am heard.

“This is the same for all the teams across the different roles, everyone has their strengths and these are recognised and respected,” added Cassandra.

Just recently, Cassandra fulfilled a professional ambition by attending the European Veterinary Dental Forum in Krakow, Poland, for the first time. Abbey House has supported Cassandra’s attendance financially and also by arranging for her to have time off.

Outside of work, Cassandra loves reading books, growing indoor plants and spending time with her dog and two cats.

Abbey House Veterinary Hospital is open 24 hours a day and is based in Morley, Leeds. It also has practices in Rothwell, Cleckheaton, Batley and Kippax. For more information visit www.abbeyvetspets.co.uk
