Surrey Vet Practice Officially Top Dog For Canine Friendliness

A Surrey vet practice is barking up the right tree after being recognised for its high quality of care for dogs.
Maven Vets in North Cheam is one of the first Linnaeus-owned animal hospitals to receive the Dog Friendly Clinic accreditation by the Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest canine charity and the British Veterinary Behaviour Association (BVBA).
The hospital already met many of the requirements such as having a separate dog and cat waiting rooms, consult rooms and kennels, as well as using in-house medication to ease anxiety in dogs, promoting positive reinforcement and having access to local trainers and behaviourists.
In addition, Maven arranged training sessions for all team members to ensure they’re fully up to date with their knowledge on canine behaviour and how to deal with anxious dogs.
Jade Prior, lead nurse at Maven Vets, said: “Being a dog friendly clinic means clients can rest assured their dog is going to get the most out of their visit to us.
“Dog friendly clinics are able to help nervous or anxious dogs to learn to like visiting their vet, using positive reinforcement and a better approach.”
Maven team members have also attended Dogs Trust online webinars and booked a lunch and learn with a local behaviourist for training in anxiety clinics, while the clinic has introduced non-slip mats for arthritic and elderly dogs in its waiting room and aims to make provisions for nervous dogs.
Jade added: “It’s a real honour to be one of the early members of this scheme, especially as one of the first Linnaeus-owned practices to be involved.
“The dog friendly title helps us support our patients and clients even further, while developing as a practice.”
Rachel Casey, Head of Canine Behaviour and Research at Dogs Trust said: “Veterinary care is an essential part of dogs’ lives, but some find visits to the vets stressful. We are very pleased to collaborate with the BVBA to create the Dog Friendly Clinic scheme to help veterinary practices embed the principles of behavioural medicine into clinic life.
“Vet clinics are at the forefront of recognising and preventing the development of problem behaviours in dogs, and this scheme will help them develop the skills and knowledge to optimise the wellbeing of the dogs in their care.”
