One of the South West’s leading animal hospitals has literally ‘branched’ out and helped to plant almost 400 trees across the UK with a novel initiative to help fight climate change.

Linnaeus-owned Cave Veterinary Specialists, near Wellington, Somerset, committed last year to plant a tree for every veterinary practice which referred a case to them in 2022.

Cave also pledged to plant another tree for every ten further cases that practice subsequently sent their way.

Such has been the success of the initiative that 376 trees have taken root. The tree-planting scheme also partners with Cave’s continuing commitment to reducing its emissions and waste, while increasing recycling.

Cave teamed up with the national, not-for-profit online organisation eForests which oversaw the planting.

Cave’s hospital director Claire Lawrence said: “The tree planting initiative has been a great success. It was a great way to combine marking our own growth in business with our continued focus on fighting climate change.”

eForests was set up in 2006 to help combat climate change and create and restore woodlands across the country.

It is run almost entirely by volunteers and all profits help fund the tree planting projects nationwide.

Claire added: “It is a very user-friendly and efficient scheme. eForests buy the trees from the money we donate and they are then given free of charge to charities, trusts and landowners for projects they’re working on.

“These projects are running all over the UK and it’s something we’re proud to have supported, especially as it leaves a real legacy that will last for many years to come.”

Cave has received a silver award from the Investors in the Environment (iiE) and is working towards reaccrediting again in March while also working towards achieving the prestigious Green iiE status in 2024.

Cave offers comprehensive, specialist-led services in anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery and soft tissue surgery.
