Medivet Hertford veterinary nurse Amie Gilman and her rescue dog, Kora, were two of the stars of Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs this week. Kora, a Cane Corso (also known as an Italian Mastiff) was dumped on the busy A10 on 22 July and taken to one of Medivet’s 24-hour centres in Enfield, where veterinary nurse Amie was working. Kora had shown signs of suffering terrible physical abuse, including having her ears cut off with scissors and her tail docked.
Amie instantly fell in love with Kora, but the dog had to spend the compulsory seven days with the local dog warden in case an owner could be found. She was eventually taken to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home where she was known as Sophie. She was found to have an overseas microchip, but the contact details were out of date. Paul O’Grady met her during the filming of his TV series and followed her story in this week’s episode.
When it was clear that no owner could be traced, Amie adopted Kora and went to Battersea to collect her from Paul. She has now been living with her at home in Harlow for two months and is settling in very well with Amie’s other furry friends, which include two cats and two ferrets.
Amie said: “Dogs like Kora can be stigmatised because of their breed and someone has tried to make her look frightening by cutting off her ears. In fact, she is an absolute sweetheart and I intend to train her as a therapy dog. She’s a perfect ambassador for her breed and I hope that other people will hear her story and realise that these dogs can make wonderful pets.”
