CEVA’s prestigious ‘Chris Laurence Vet of the Year’ award honours and celebrates the fantastic work now-retired vet Chris Laurence contributed as a key player in the world of animal welfare; throughout his career in the veterinary industry, and for animal charities from 1968. Vet Marc Abraham, known as ‘Marc the Vet’ has had an eventful year that’s not only seen him practicing as a full time small animal vet in Sussex, but also neuter dogs and rescue a baby bear in Ukraine, perform surgery on a moonbear in China, as well as gaining 100,000 signatures on his government e-petition to end puppy farming - triggering a debate in the House of Commons due in March 2014. Marc’s campaign to fight puppy farming - ‘PupAid’ - which has received huge celebrity backing (including Ricky Gervais and Brian May), started five years ago when Marc treated irresponsibly bred puppies brought into his surgery dying of a deadly virus. He then vowed to do something about the UK’s cruel puppy farming industry, which is responsible for mass producing puppies in horrific conditions to be sold from pet shops, private dealers, websites, garden centres, even motorway service stations. Finalist Marc, who’s appeared giving pet advice on Daybreak, ITV This Morning, and BBC Breakfast says “I’m incredibly proud to be nominated for such a prestigious award for animal welfare which all helps to raise further awareness of not only my PupAid campaign to end puppy farming, but also the fantastic charities and campaign groups out there doing such wonderful work improving animals’ lives.” Marc continues “Animal welfare is about caring. It’s about showing empathy and all working together as a team to make sure animal are respected and looked after, whether it’s bear bile farming, puppy farming, badger culling, or fox hunting.” Award sponsors CEVA said “We’re approaching our third year of this successful endeavour, to formerly recognise and thank those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. CEVA is a company that acknowledges and rewards those who work to improve the welfare and care of animals, which is why we have created these awards. The ‘Vet of the Year’ award recognises a veterinary surgeon working in practice that follows the footsteps of Chris [Laurence] by educating pet owners and consistently demonstrating their commitment to the continued improvement of animal welfare.” CEVA’s Animal Welfare Awards take place in Birmingham on Wed April 2nd 2014 for more info visit: www.cevawelfareawards.com For more on Marc’s work visit www.marcthevet.com
