Five vets at the Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre will be growing ‘comedy mo’s in support of ‘Movember’, a month-long campaign which fundraises for research into men’s health including prostate disease during November. Practice directors, Mike Hewitt and Nick Snookes, equine vets Ben Wakeling and Ricky Farr and ‘exotics’ vet, Steve Smith are all having a clean shave on 31 October before starting work on their new creations, which will include a ‘trucker mo’ and a ‘major mo.’ They hope to raise money through collections at the practice and via the Movember website.
Wendover Heights is also taking part in Canine Prostate Awareness Month during November, reminding owners that it’s not only men who suffer from prostate disease. Research shows that more than 80% of unneutered dogs over five are likely to be sufferers, with symptoms including constipation, lameness and difficulties in urination. If left untreated the disease can progress quickly, causing serious health problems. A free dog lead will be given to owners who bring their dogs in for a prostate check up during the month.
“Prostate disease in men is a serious problem and that’s why we’re keen to raise funds for the Movember Foundation,” comments Steve. “I hope my friends and clients can put up with my strange appearance for the month! It’s also important that owners realise that prostate disease is also a threat to the health of older, unneutered dogs so I hope they’ll bring their dogs in for a test. They can check out progress on our mo’s while they’re with us!”3509 views
