The clinical director at one of the country’s leading veterinary referral centres has been elected as the next chair of the AOVET European board.

Toby Gemmill, clinical director at the state-of-the-art Willows Veterinary Centre, in Solihull, will take up his role in July.

AOVET is one of the four clinical divisions of the AO group (Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Osteosynthesefragen), a global organisation dedicated to improving patient outcomes through research and education in orthopaedics. The other clinical divisions are for human orthopaedics and include trauma, spine and craniomaxillofacial surgery.

In his position as chairman, Toby, an RCVS Specialist in Small Animal Surgery, will organise and oversee AOVET courses, help to develop new educational material and train younger surgeons to become faculty among numerous other responsibilities.

He said: “I feel honoured to be elected to this post. My main aim for the next few years is to cement AOVET’s position as a global leader in the provision of postgraduate orthopaedic education, and ultimately to improve surgeons’ understanding, decision-making and technical abilities, for the benefit of the patients under their care.”

Toby has been with Willows, which is part of the Linnaeus Group, for 12 years, the last two of those as clinical director.

Willows has recently launched a gold standard radioactive iodine treatment unit for cats with hyperthyroidism as part of a major £1 million extension, which includes a dedicated operating theatre for minimally invasive procedures, a range of specialist treatment rooms and more than 40 new kennels.

Toby said: “We are already extremely well placed at Willows to offer a wide variety of specialist treatments and this extension has provided us with the space to expand our services further. The new radioactive iodine unit is very exciting and allows us to build on our gold level cat-friendly clinic status.”
