This practical one-day workshop will cover essential foal skills for clinicians working in ambulatory practice. The morning starts with lectures and the rest of the day is a mix of hands-on small group practical skills sessions and case-based discussions.
Essential skills for vets in ambulatory practice seeing foal cases will be covered. The morning starts with short lectures. After the coffee break we move onto the hands-on sessions and case based discussions will include over-the-wire catheter placement, CPR, foal squeeze- when and how and management flexural deformities in the field.
Learning Outcomes
Develop the knowledge, skills and techniques to logically diagnose, manage and treat common problems of foals in ambulatory practice
Develop the knowledge and skills to apply sustaninable parasite control in youngstock in practice
Develop the ability to identify and manage congenital limb deformities
Lectures:
The rational use of systemic antimicrobials in foals
Assessment and stabilisation of the neonate in the field
Sedation and analgesia of foals
Sustainable parasite control in foals and youngstock in practice
Practical Sessions:
“Vera Vein” - over-the-wire catheter placement
Foal Squeeze
Foal CPR
Casting and Bandaging limb deformities
Assessment and management of angular and flexural limb deformities
Case-based Discussions:
Fluid Therapy/electrolytes and acid-base monitoring in practice
Parasite control- applying current best practice on the stud farm
Thoracic and abdominal ultrasound
Hernias- which ones to treat and how
Who is it for?
This workshop is suitable for ambulatory vets wishing to develop practical skills and techniques used in the management of foal cases as well as those working towards the RCVS CertAVP Equine Stud Medicine and B-EP.3, C-VA.3, C-E.19, C-E.11, C-E.10, C-E.9 or C-E.17 Module.

The Venue
Leahurst campus
Located in the heart of rural Cheshire, 12 miles south of Liverpool, the Veterinary School's Leahurst campus employs over 350 staff, including over 100 veterinary surgeons and teaches veterinary students in all years of their studies, but especially those in their fourth and fifth years.
The site is home to two farms, two referral hospitals, and two of the Institute's three first-opinion practices.
