Date: Tuesday 13th October, 2026 - Thursday 15th October, 2026
Start time: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Duration: 1 hour(s)
Cost: £395

Join the Leahurst Equine Hospital teams for 3 days of equine ultrasonography and orthopaedics. Designed to enable you to practice your own diagnostic ultrasound and orthopaedic therapeutic skills under the close guidance of recognised specialists, this workshop will increase your confidence investigating distal limb lameness and using the scanner for a wide range of common medical and orthopaedic clinical cases.

Each day can be booked separately, tailored to your interests, or as a comprehensive 3 day course.

Day One:
An introduction to diagnostic ultrasound in equine medical cases. The day starts with a lecture on how to get the most out of your ultrasound machine and how to avoid common pitfalls. A series of interactive lectures follow, covering abdominal, thoracic and ocular ultrasonography with the group then dividing into small group sessions for some hands-on scanning under supervision to put these skills into practice.

There will be ample opportunity to practice what you have learnt on a variety of horses with a range of scanners.

Learning Outcomes
Apply an understanding of the ultrasound machine set-up in order to maximise functionality and therefore optimise image acquisition
Demonstrate the practical skills required to acquire accurate ultrasound images of diagnostic quality, and demonstrate a systematic approach to ultrasonography of the equine abdomen, thorax and eye.
Day Two:
An introduction to diagnostic ultrasound in orthopaedic disease. A series of lectures in the morning cover common diseases of the distal limb, including superficial flexor tendonitis, suspensory and AL-DDFT desmitis, and the ultrasound anatomy of the lower limb, carpal sheath and tarsal region. The afternoon is spent working in small groups, rotating through hands-on practical scanning of the forelimb and hind limb with ample time to work on skills taught in the lectures, leaving you both confident and competent in orthopaedic ultrasound of the equine patient.

Learning Outcomes
Demonstrate a logical approach to diagnosis and treatment of common diseases of the equine distal limb
Demonstrate the practical skills required to acquire accurate ultrasound images of diagnostic quality of the equine distal limb.
Day Three:
Join the Leahurst Equine Hospital orthopaedic team for a day of practical distal limb orthopaedics. This day is perfect for the new or recent graduate looking to increase their diagnostic and therapeutic skills, while under the supportive guidance of experienced clinicians. Day three offers a morning of lectures covering basic diagnostic anaesthesia and pitfalls before a series of “How to” sessions on common orthopaedic techniques, will look at optimising these in clinics. The afternoon will allow you to put these new skills into practice, with cadaver-based sessions helping to build confidence performing practical lameness investigations.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a logical approach to investigating common causes of lameness affecting the equine distal limb.
Demonstrate the practical skills required to perform orthopaedic diagnostic or therapeutic procedures of the equine distal limb.

When booking onto this full 3 day course option you will recieve a 20% discount which has already been applied to the price.

This workshop is kindly sponsored by IMV Imaging.
