A West Country veterinary centre has been given a glowing assessment by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) as it received official recognition as a fully-accredited small animal hospital.

Cave Veterinary Specialists, near West Buckland in Somerset, earned the high praise after a recent inspection of the practice.

The resulting RCVS report delivered a ringing endorsement of Cave’s highly-trained staff and the care they deliver to their animal patients.

Their assessor’s official feedback read: “I was impressed with the dedication of the staff to their patients, adding that extra bit of care and attention that matters so much to the critical patient.

“The staff appeared to work well together and the atmosphere was one of calm efficiency.”

Cave’s hospital director Sarah Hicks said: “Our focus is always on delivering excellent care through the expertise of our multi-disciplined team of highly-trained specialists and skilled veterinary nurses.

“For the RCVS to have recognised and highlighted our exceptional care is a great compliment indeed and a real endorsement to our patients’ owners and our referring vets.

“These inspections are run by the profession, for the profession and we are thrilled at the comments and determined to maintain, and even improve, the high standards we have set ourselves.”

The hospital accreditation comes at a time of significant growth and continuous improvement at the practice.

Cave recently appointed internal medicine specialist Nele Van den Steen and Tom Cardy, a specialist in veterinary neurology, as co-clinical directors and has five new specialists on the team since the turn of the year.

EBVS internal medicine diplomate Dr Jenny von Luckner has been recruited as head of medicine, while Simon Bertram (neurology), Will MacFadzean (anaesthesia and analgesia), Anna Nutt (small animal surgery) and Malcolm Jack (small animal surgery) have all achieved EBVS diplomate status in the first quarter of 2020.

The centre has also been approved as a nursing training practice and has just taken on its first training cohort.

Cave Veterinary Specialists offer a comprehensive range of services including anaesthesia, cardiology, dermatology, internal medicine, neurology and neurosurgery, oncology, orthopaedic surgery, pain management, rehabilitation and soft tissue surgery.
